Exercise: Focus with a set aperture

I tried this exercise several times with several different subjects - bikes & houses for example - before it worked for me. Finally this one, with apples, worked well and I could see the point of the exercise. They are in the wrong order with the top left picture showing at the smallest aperture (biggest number) and then the bottom left at the largest aperture (smallest number) showing the nearest apple as the most in focus. I prefer the bottom one with the apple a the front in focus because it is focussing on the apple very clearly and really makes it stand out. The the top left picture with the apple at the back more focussed also focusses on the wall and chair and makes the the apple seem less important somehow.
