Assignment 3: Colour - colour accent

This bottle in Trafalgar Square taken from the ground looking up shows a small area of red against the blue sky. The red seal on the bottle is very defined. The bottle contains a boat which has some red in it but not nearly so strong. The blue sky really makes the photo. I like the way you can see the sky through the glass which creates more interest.
This was a small patch underneath a tree which I thought looked stunning. It was set in a concrete jungle of offices and shops and looked so delicate. It shows the accents of red and pink - next to one another on the colour wheel - against a background of contrasting green leaves (opposite to red on the colour wheel) and dried out brown leaves. The darker brown of the soil also creates a good contrast. There's quite a lot going on colourwise in this photo but it's the accents of pink and red that stick out the most. This was a painting I found in an arcade which illustrates red with an accent of bluey/green. The different reds/oranges/yellows do not distract from the colour of the centre blue/green swirl of colour. They are contrasting colours which makes them stick out against one another well.
This is a picture of dusk looking up at the sky through a tree with the leaves creating colour accents of yellow against the blue sky. The flash picked out the leaves and because the sky was turning from a bright blue to a dusky blue it looks very rich making the leaves stick out even more.

Assignment 3: Colour - contrasting colours
The purple of the flower contrasts against the green of the leaves and makes it really stick out. I wanted to show the lines of the green leaves and flower petals which are similar to each other in comparison to the contrasting colours.
These gourds showing yellow and very dark green - almost navy blue - are a good example of contrasting colours. The patterns on the gourds accentuate the contrasts because they all run against one another. The shapes of the gourds also create more pattern because they are one of top of another. I really love these colours together and felt drawn to taking a close up to really accentuate the contrasts and amazing patterns.
The pink and orange of these maps was something I noticed on the shelf at home as being a good example of contrasting colours. They are clashing against one another but also look attractive. The evenness of the lines of each map make the pattern look even and quite ordered.
These tins of tuna are a good example of contrasting colours red and yellow. Again, I liked the evenness of the pattern they create which is why I focussed in so that the tins filled the whole screen. They don't look quite so clashing as the orange and pink of the maps but because the colours are so different in a way I don't find them as appealing as the orange/pink. They look more stark somehow.
Assignment 3: Colour - similar colours

The red chairs and red carpet are in a cafe in Hyde Park which is all red. I thought it looked quite wonderful. This is a warm photo with reds on reds. The only way you can see the chairs and table is because they are made of different materials to the carpet. Otherwise you might see nothing at all - just red!

The yellows/oranges/browns of these leaves are warm and the sun shining on them make them more so. I love autumn with piles of leaves of similar colour showing different textures.

Assignment 3: Colour - complementary colours

The orange of the walls and blue of the shutters are complementary colours which I thought looked really beautiful together. Because both colours are quite pale they look soft and relaxing together. They are evenly spaced providing quite an ordered photo.
The top picture shows purples and yellows which are complementary colours. The colours are both in the jar contents and in the labels which adds an extra dimension. I liked the way the purples were all slightly different ranging from darker deep purple to a redder purple. The yellows go from deep, strong yellow of the jar contents to the greeny yellow labels which, against the darker jar contents look more green than yellow. The red berries with green leaves look harmonious together. Added to this the texture of the leaves and the berries - both small roundish shapes - makes them look like red and green gemstones which was the effect I wanted.

I wanted to take a picture of some clementines in my blue fruit bowl because I've always really loved the way they look together. They are vibrant and attractive. This is a good and straightforward example of complementary colours.

Exercise: Colour relationships - part two

Here I have chosen colour combinations that appealed to me.
The purple flowers against green leaves are contrasting colours but because the purple is quite pale (and therefore going towards red on the colour wheel) they are almost complementary which means that they look quite pleasing and relaxing to my eye. I really like green/pink combinations for this reason.
The signpost is blue and brown, another combination I really like. I think that is because they are complementary colours.
The orange, yellow and red of the tomatoes - a mixture of colours that are next to each other and a third away on the colour wheel - make a truly delicious combination of colours which almost jangles in front of the eyes.
The pomegranite against the blue sky and green leaves shows a mixture of blue and green (next to each other on the colour wheel) against the orange/yellow of the pomegranite. So, sort of complementary colours blue and orange with some extra bits I think makes a vibrant but also quite relaxing combination.
Exercise: Colour Relationships - part one

Red and Green 1:1 - my friends apron/t shirt. I had to crop the photo to get the right proportions (as I did with the others). Orange and Blue 1:2 was an orange house with blue shutters. Finally, yellow:violet 1:3 is rather blurred but I didn't think that mattered as it still shows the contrast of the bananas and plums which is beautiful.
